Bella

Remembering our cherished companion, Bella Rose Mitchell, who taught us the true meaning of coping with pet loss

The journey through pet grief is never easy, but saying goodbye to my beautiful German Shepherd Bella last week has been one of the most difficult losses I’ve experienced. For 11 wonderful years, Bella filled our home with unconditional love, loyalty, and the kind of companionship that only a dog can provide.

Bella came to us as an energetic 8-week-old puppy, all paws and curiosity. From the start, she had this incredible ability to sense emotions – rushing to comfort anyone who was sad, celebrating alongside us during happy moments. Throughout the pet bereavement process, I’ve found myself remembering how Bella would rest her head on my lap during difficult times, as if to say, “I’m here, and that’s enough.”

Our morning walks were sacred rituals. Rain or shine, Bella would wait patiently by the door with her leash, those soulful brown eyes filled with excitement for our daily adventure. Even as arthritis began to slow her pace in recent years, she never lost her enthusiasm for exploring the neighborhood, greeting every person and dog with her signature gentle wag.

Bella loved swimming in the lake during our summer trips to the cabin, retrieving sticks for hours until we’d insist she take a break. She had this adorable habit of “tucking in” the family each night, making rounds to each bedroom to give goodnight kisses before settling at the foot of our bed.

When cancer took hold three months ago, Bella faced it with the same quiet dignity she approached everything in life. The pet hospice care team who helped us through her final days commented that they’d rarely seen such a brave dog. Making the decision for pet euthanasia was heart-wrenching, but we knew it was our final act of love to prevent her suffering.

Now, as I navigate the stages of pet grief, I find comfort in creating a memorial garden where Bella loved to sunbathe. Each plant represents a different aspect of her personality – sturdy lavender for her loyalty, cheerful daisies for her joyful spirit, and protective roses (her namesake) surrounding it all.

For those experiencing similar pet loss trauma, please know that the pain does eventually soften. The empty space in your home might remain, but your heart will gradually fill with grateful memories instead of sorrow.
