Cinnamon

Wheels in heaven – Remembering our sweet Cinnamon Alvarado, the caramel-colored guinea pig who filled our days with joy

The small pet bereavement process holds unique challenges, especially explaining rainbow bridge concepts to young children who have lost their beloved companion. Our family is navigating this difficult journey after saying goodbye to Cinnamon, our beloved caramel and white guinea pig, who passed away yesterday after four wonderful years of “wheeks,” popcorning, and endless personality.

When my daughter Maya received Cinnamon for her 8th birthday, we expected a cage-bound rodent but discovered instead a social, expressive little soul who recognized family members, had distinct preferences, and communicated remarkably well for a creature of her size. With her distinctive swirl of caramel colored fur on her head and her bright, curious eyes, Cinnamon quickly became the center of our kitchen where her habitat allowed her to be part of family life.

What made Cinnamon special was her responsiveness to human interaction. Unlike some small pets who merely tolerate handling, she genuinely seemed to enjoy being gently held, often falling asleep on Maya’s chest during their special bonding time. Her excited wheeks when she heard the refrigerator door open (signaling possible vegetable treats) could be heard throughout the house and never failed to make us smile.

Cinnamon loved fresh cilantro, cardboard tubes stuffed with hay, and floor time when she could explore a safely enclosed area of the living room. She had a distinct dislike of loud noises, being picked up from above (side scoops only, please!), and having her nails trimmed – though she tolerated the latter with sweet resignation if treats were involved.

Small animal hospice care became our focus in recent weeks as Cinnamon developed age-related health issues. The exotic pet veterinarian who specialized in guinea pig care helped us ensure her comfort until we made the difficult decision for humane euthanasia when her quality of life began to decline.

Creating age-appropriate pet memorial activities has been essential in helping Maya process her grief. Together, we created a memory book filled with photos, drawings, and stories of Cinnamon’s antics. We held a small backyard ceremony where Maya read a poem she wrote about her furry friend before we placed a painted rock as a marker where we buried Cinnamon beneath her favorite flowers.

For parents helping children through pet loss trauma with small companions, I’ve found that honesty, validation of feelings, and concrete ways to remember their pet help transform grief into beautiful lessons about love, care, and the circle of life.

Though small in size, guinea pigs like Cinnamon leave enormous impacts on our hearts – teaching us about gentle handling, consistent care, and the joy found in the simple pleasures of fresh vegetables and cozy hideaways.
