In loving memory of Cooper James Bennett, our loyal companion and best friend
It’s been two weeks since we said goodbye to our beloved Cooper, and our home still feels so empty without the clickety-clack of his nails on the hardwood floor. Cooper came into our lives as a rambunctious 8-week-old Golden Retriever puppy twelve years ago, and from day one, he made it his mission to spread joy everywhere he went.
Cooper was known in our neighborhood as the unofficial welcoming committee. He would greet every visitor, delivery person, and passerby with the same enthusiastic tail wag and hopeful eyes that seemed to say, “Maybe YOU want to throw my ball!” His favorite spot was by the front window where he could keep watch over our street, alerting us to important events like the mail carrier’s arrival or a squirrel daring to enter his territory.
What made Cooper special wasn’t just his friendly nature but his incredible empathy. Somehow, he always knew when one of us was having a rough day. During my battle with cancer three years ago, Cooper rarely left my side. He would gently rest his head on my lap during chemotherapy recovery days, as if to say, “I’m here, and we’ll get through this together.”
Cooper loved his trips to the lake where he would swim until we practically had to drag him out of the water. Even in his senior years, the mention of “lake” would have him spinning in excited circles by the door. His joy was so pure and contagious.
On April 2nd, surrounded by his family and after enjoying one last cheeseburger (his absolute favorite), Cooper crossed the Rainbow Bridge. The vet said his heart was simply worn out, but we know the truth – his heart was just too big and full of love for this world.
While the pain of losing him is still raw, I find comfort in knowing that Cooper lived his best dog life – full of belly rubs, tennis balls, stolen socks, and so much love. We miss you every day, sweet boy. Chase those squirrels in heaven until we meet again.
